LASIK , PRK, SMILE: What’s The Difference?

LASIK is the most commonly performed laser eye surgery today, and was approved in 1995 by the U.S Food and Drug Administration. It is a wonderful option for individuals who wish to reduce their dependence on eyeglasses or contact lenses and improve their overall vision. For both personal and professional reasons, active and social patients in the greater Los Angeles area choose LASIK eye surgery, as it allows them to more freely pursue their hobbies, sports activities or career options.

LASIK is generally safe and is a very successful procedure when patients take the time to educate themselves and diligently search for a skilled and qualified eye surgeon. Advancements in LASIK technology have continued to increase its effectiveness and safety profile. Click on here to learn more about LASIK in Los Angeles.

Cataracts are extremely common among individuals aged sixty and up. In fact, all people will eventually develop cataracts if they live to be old enough. A cataract is a clouding of the crystalline lens of the eye, and the only way to remove cataracts is through cataract surgery. This is one of the safest procedures available in medicine. At our Los Angeles Cataract Center, Dr. Rex Hamilton meets with each patient to review cataract treatment options that best fit their lifestyle needs; he is world-renowned for Premium Cataract Surgery and has helped thousands of patients achieve better vision after their cataracts have been removed.

Cataract surgery with Rex Hamilton, M.D. involves the removal of the clouded lens, which is then replaced with a synthetic intraocular lens (IOL). Depending on a patient’s lifestyle preferences, there are various types of IOLs that can help patients to correct presbyopia or to restore distance, intermediate, and near vision. I had SMILE with Dr. Hamilton at the end of last year and am still thrilled with the results. I had lived with a strong glasses and contacts prescription since elementary school, which was a constant annoyance between athletics, long outdoor trips, and the daily hassle of handling contacts. Now I can't believe I didn't get this done earlier!I consulted with several laser eye centers in LA before my surgery, and of all the places I visited Dr. Hamilton felt the most assuring and least like a sales pitch. Unlike other providers where I only met a technician, Dr. Hamilton personally examined me and discussed my case in detail during the initial consultation. The procedure itself lasted about 10 minutes and by the next morning I could see well enough to drive. Within two weeks I was completely recovered with perfect vision.Even now, months later, I'm still amazed every morning when I wake up and can see clearly without fumbling around for glasses. Thank you for the amazing, life-changing care!

I have better than 20/20 vision now - measured about 20/15 one day post-op. The indescribable feeling of having that acuity in my own eyes aside, the surgery experience was fantastic. In fact, it was pretty cool. Not only that but I returned to work the next morning with no issues and my eyes felt totally back to normal 3-4 days after the surgery (except for some night vision starbursts which is getting better). I had LASIK.Dr. Hamilton was terrific. I needed this surgery soon to be eligible for pilot boards in the spring, and Dr. Hamilton changed his schedule to accommodate this so I could go in sooner, on short notice, without me asking. He was also very patient and helped me decide on the right procedure. You can tell he has a passion for what he does (he has published over 40 publications over the past 25 years on laser eye surgery), is a master at it, and he is a great guy to talk to!The experience:- During the first consultation, I met with Dr. Hamilton face-to-face. He answered my very long list of questions about SMILE vs LASIK, what machines he uses (the latest), his experience, etc. He studied engineering in the past so he showed me his performance data in a spreadsheet that he uses to fine tune the laser based on past data (he showed me that 60% of his patients see 20/16 or better after surgery). As an engineer myself, this made me feel very comfortable about doing it.- Before the surgery he told me exactly what to expect, which was calming, and throughout the surgery, he told me exactly what to do, which was very simple. It was remarkably easy and painless and I was out it what felt like 10 minutes, feeling like I was 8 again with perfect vision. The entire time I was in the room I was in awe of the machine and just seeing the process in front of me that was correcting my vision so quickly. It was so amazing.- Once you wake up for the first time after surgery you have a Spiderman moment where you try to put on your glasses and realize you can see perfectly without them. And then you're just in awe.

I had the SMILE procedure done by Dr. Hamilton back in December of last year and I've got to say, it was the BEST decision I've ever made. From the start, Dr. Hamilton was extremely knowledgeable, professional, and made me feel very comfortable with what to expect during and after the procedure. There was no pain whatsoever and the surgery was done in just a few short minutes. The recovery process was almost nonexistent and left me with 20/10 vision!!! It's safe to say that Dr. Hamilton is truly a master of his craft (and an awesome guy too!). 10/10 would recommend him to anybody. Thank you so much Dr. Hamilton!

I got LASIK two weeks ago with Dr. Hamilton and from the initial consult to the pre and post-op visits, I had smooth, easy, transparent and straightforward interactions with the staff. Dr. Hamilton walked me through all the steps of the procedure both before and during to help calm any nerves. The recovery was as expected and the next day I could see perfectly. I highly recommend Dr. Hamilton for corrective eye surgery.

Dr. Hamilton is absolutely amazing. Great doctor that really takes the time to explain his recommendations. He recommended Visian ICL surgery for me and it was an amazing experience and an overall success. I can see one line further down on the eye chart than before with glasses/contacts. I can see details that I couldn’t see before and am so pleased.

I just had Dr. Hamilton perform SMILE surgery for vision correction in April of this year (2021) and I would recommend his practice for anyone in the Los Angeles area who is thinking about corrective eye surgery. I first learned of Dr. Hamilton when I was a student at UCLA and he was the director of the UCLA Laser Refractive Center. Since then, he's moved to a private practice just down the street and gets to focus more on performing surgeries. He takes the time to make sure you understand the different options available to you, answers every question you have to make sure you're comfortable with your decision, and walks you through the surgery that only takes a few minutes from start to finish. I had my appointment on a Monday afternoon and was back at work in the office by Tuesday morning. There was slight blurriness the first few days but my vision completely corrected to 20/20 in about a week. Some eye dryness and sensitivity to sunlight lasted for about a month but it's nothing a pair of sunglasses and some eye drops can't easily take care of.It's been almost 2 months now and I can't thank Dr. Hamilton enough for an awesome job! He and his staff are extremely friendly so give them a call if you're even just curious about vision correction.

Love love loveDr Hamilton was recommended to my husband by a patient/friend of ours. It’s very unnerving to think about having ones eyes worked on in any way, but Dr Hamilton’s incredible knowledge and impressive experience teamed with his patients with our endless questions reassured us.5 years later when I ran into issues with my own vision, Dr Hamilton was again our choice. With weeks of cautious and exacting preparation, my confidence built till the day of my procedure which in the end was a 100% quick and relaxing experience.Amazing. Now I can see ! I have 20/15 vision ! Truly incredible. I am a visual effects supervisor so you can imagine my concerns and value in seeing perfectly both close up and at a distance.I highly recommend Dr Hamilton.
